Highly-rated English attack coach departs Super Rugby Pacific side with immediate effect
Mike Catt has left his role as Waratahs attack coach.
Rugby World Cup winner and England legend Mike Catt has left the Waratahs by mutual consent following two years as attack coach at the Super Rugby Pacific side.
The 54-year-old former Bath and London Irish centre joined the Australian outfit in 2024 ahead of the 2025 season, overseeing the team’s attack for two campaigns.
Catt arrived at the Waratahs as part of a fresh coaching structure, alongside head coach Dan McKellar and fellow assistant coaches Lachlan McCaffrey and Dan Palmer.
Significant contribution
Director of High Performance B-J Mather acknowledged the former England back’s contribution to the club during his tenure and wished him every success in the future.
“Mike has made a significant contribution to the Waratahs since joining and on behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to thank him for his efforts and professionalism during this time,” Mather said.
“He has not only brought extensive international experience, but also a strong commitment to helping both players and coaches improve at the Waratahs.
“We wish Mike well in the next chapter of his coaching career and wish him and his family all the best for the future.”
The Sydneysiders confirmed that the 2003 Rugby World Cup winner has departed the club with immediate effect and the process to appoint his successor is under way.
It’s ultimately been a disappointing Super Rugby Pacific campaign for the ‘Tahs as they finished the regular season in eighth place, claiming just five wins from 15 games.
No Aussie representation
McKellar’s side ended up eight points adrift of the final play-off place, taken by the Brumbies, with the Reds the only other Australian outfit to make the knockout stages.
Both of those teams bowed out of the competition last week, falling to the Hurricanes 66-12 and Chiefs 46-24 respectively to end Australia’s involvement in this season.
It’s therefore an all-New Zealand semi-final line-up this weekend as the Chiefs host the Crusaders on Friday before the Hurricanes face off with the Blues on Saturday.
