Western Force winger Harry Potter caught the Chiefs napping to score in the Super Rugby Pacific fixture at the Bay Oval Stadium in Mount Maunganui.

The Chiefs had just scored a stunning try through winger Emoni Narawa, who pounced on a beautiful kick over the top by full-back Shaun Stevenson.

Fly-half Josh Jacomb, who was filling in at fly-half in the absence of Damian McKenzie, duly converted the easy conversion, and that’s when the Western Force struck.

Harry Potter magic

Ben Donaldson sprinted to the halfway line to restart play and was joined by his winger Potter, who was the only Force player there to chase.

The number 10 thumped the ball long into the Chiefs‘ 22, catching the New Zealanders unawares as many of the players were still grabbing some water.

Potter chased the ball brilliantly and managed to scoop it up and avoid the only Chiefs defender enough to sneak over in the corner.

Puns in full force

The Western Force pair acted so quickly that the Super Rugby broadcasters initially missed the score as the replays of Narawa’s try were still being shown when Potter snuck over the line.

“That’s Harry Potter! That’s unbelievable! Caught the world napping,” commentator Tony Johnson remarked.

With a co-commentator, adding: “I think he had the invisibility cloak on there. The Chiefs still had water bottles in their hands.”

As per usual, the Harry Potter puns were rife on social media in response to the winger’s try.

“Harry Potter and the mystery of that try,” Steve Lenthall wrote on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

Another post read: “Harry Potter just did some magic against the Chiefs.”

James McOnie brilliantly added: “Did Harry Potter just slither in?”
