‘Greatest of all time’ – Fans laud Antoine Dupont following inspired Olympic Gold

Everything Antoine Dupont touches seems to turn to gold, but this certainly came true for the French Sevens team as they beat Fiji 28-7 to win Olympic Gold on home soil.

France had to endure a tough opening day, and at one point looked like they were heading for the exit door, but they grew into the tournament as it went on and things came to a head in the final.

The Toulouse and France skipper produced an inspired performance to help his side beat two-time Olympic champions Fiji at the Stade de France, notching two tries and one assist on their way to an historic victory.

As usual, social media was a hotbed of discussion; but last night everyone was saying the same thing.

‘The greatest rugby player of all time’

Dupont seems to have improved, if that was actually possible, so much since moving over to Sevens, but his performance in the final has led popular rugby content creator Squidge Rugby to describe his as ‘the greatest rugby player of all time’.

Squidge Rugby wasn’t alone with this opinion either. X user The Loose Head took to the platform to laud the display of Dupont and call him ‘the best men’s player to ever touch a rugby ball’.

It’s always subjective.

But Antoine Dupont is, in my opinion, the best men’s player to ever touch a rugby ball.

Picking up an Olympic gold medal in Sevens during union’s off-season after doing the double with Toulouse.

The outpouring of GOAT comparisons on social media has some very sound logic behind it too. X user Welsh Republic Podcast did some digging to reveal Dupont’s personal trophy cabinet after his incredible year of winning the Top 14, Investec Champions Cup and now Olympic Gold.

Dupont’s crowing moment came in the final as he scored two tries, but his assist was arguably the best moment of the match; which led to people describing him as ‘outrageous’.
