Fiji were dealt a massive setback on the eve of their upcoming Rugby World Cup campaign when fly-half Caleb Muntz was forced to withdraw due to injury.

Muntz, who was the Pacific Islanders’ first choice number 10, suffered a knee injury during a training session on Monday.

The 23-year-old was one of Fiji’s heroes when they sealed a memorable 30-22 victory against England at Twickenham at the end of last month as he finished with a 15-point haul after succeeding with three penalties and as many conversions.

The Fijian Drua playmaker was expected to be in Fiji’s starting line-up when they kicked off their Rugby World Cup campaign against Wales in their Pool C clash in Bordeaux on Sunday.

Fiji head coach Simon Raiwalui confirmed the news and admitted that it’s a big blow for his team.

“On Monday, Caleb sustained a knee injury in a non-contact session and is out of the Rugby World Cup,” he told the Fijian Rugby Union’s official website.

Devastating news

“It’s most devastating for us as a group and for Caleb, he has worked so hard for the past two years with the Fijian Drua and for Flying Fijians.

“We feel for him as a young man he misses the opportunity so close to the Rugby World Cup.

“We have got 33 players and we have the utmost confidence in them. Once we name the team for the match against Wales we will have utmost faith in whom we have selected.”

Muntz made his international debut during Fiji’s 36-20 victory over Tonga in their Pacific Nations Cup Test in Lautoka earlier this year and since then has been a vital part of the team in its preparation for the Rugby World Cup in France.

Raiwalui said there are a few players outside the current group they are looking at as options to replace Muntz and will make a decision within the next couple of days.
