Fiji player ratings: Discipline issues rife as ‘moment of madness’ ends all hope at a comeback while bench provides ‘mixed bag’

15 Salesi Rayasi: The Bordeaux full-back had little to do in the first half, and his rustiness showed when England scored their opener, as he stopped running before the ball cascaded off the corner flag, landing perfectly for Marcus Smith to dive onto. Put in some clever offloads to his teammates and showed some real footwork in the second half, notably with a mazy run to set up Fiji’s first try. Was starved of any real go-forward ball overall, however, so was forced to jink sideways around the onrushing England defence. 6

14 Vuate Karawalevu: The talented winger almost scored an acrobatic opener but was assuredly shifted into touch by the covering English defence. He was all over the park in the first half and almost made a key interception during one England attack, but these 50/50 moments never came through for him, costing possession five times. Pulled at the half after being dominated in the air by Immanuel Feyi-Waboso. 4

13 Kalaveti Ravouvou: Benefited from an unstructured Fijian pick-and-go routine to score a try that involved Marcus Smith slipping in the backfield. This was chalked off, though, after referee Hollie Davidson called play back for a red card incident. Otherwise, it was a quiet showing that had little impact on the game. 5

12 Josua Tuisova: Defensively dominant and solid in attack. Fumbled the ball during a key attack towards the end of the game, but the result was already written in pen by this point. 6

11 Jiuta Wainiqolo: Halted an impressive early England attack, pouncing on the ball as Tommy Freeman kicked through. Did give the ball away too easily in attack, however, including one silly offload to Marcus Smith, which resulted in Henry Pollock’s second try. Can’t deny his commitment to the cause, though, as he was one of Fiji’s busiest men. 6

10 Caleb Muntz: Converted a comfortable first kick at goal, but struggled to gain a foothold in the game and made a poor offload when Fiji had a rare attack at the end of the first half. Not helped by his team’s lack of a solid platform, but even when Fiji did attack, he struggled to find space. 4

9 Simione Kuruvoli: Tenacious chasing of the ball early on and showed rapid speed of ball from the base of the ruck. Faded as the game went on, and a moment of madness at the end of the first half led to a red card – kicking into Ellis Genge’s chest as he raced towards the breakdown. 2

Forwards

8 Levani Botia: A frustrating afternoon for the ageing La Rochelle player. Made a silly late hit on Jack van Poortvliet to give a penalty away at a scrum, and was later yellow-carded for diving over the ruck. He made his fair share of carries and tackles, but his lack of discipline cost the team dearly. 4

7 Lekima Tagitagivalu: Dropped the ball off the opening lineout but recovered well, getting heavily involved in the action and topped the tackle charts. 6

6 Peceli Yato: The giant flanker was particularly effective in the breakdown, earning a vital turnover for his side. But he looked skatty elsewhere, notably conceding a lineout on Fiji’s five-metre line when trying to recover a bouncing ball. 5

5 Isoa Nasilasila: Effective in the lineout, winning possession four times, and gave one of the more convincing showings in open play. 5

4 Tevita Ratuva: Fumbled ball forward on his first attempted carry, but redeemed himself with a huge hit on Fin Smith shortly afterwards. Later delivered an important turnover, but made no other impact on the game before being removed at half-time. 4

3 Mesake Doge: Solid in his own scrum, but gave away a couple of penalties against the head. Made a few tackles, but didn’t register a single carry. 3

2 Tevita Ikanivere: Threw some confident darts and equally topped the tackle chart alongside Tagitagivalu. Put in a big shift, scoring Fiji’s only try of the game. 7

1 Eroni Mawi: Again, did well to hold his own in the scrum mostly, but struggled on England’s head, also giving away two penalties. 4

Replacements: It was certainly a mixed bag from the bench. A great last-ditch tackle from Elia Canakaivata to stop Benhard Janse van Rensburg’s second try, and backed this up with a four turnover wins. Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula put in a terrific covering tackle on Feyi-Waboso late into the game. But Pita-Gus Sowakula missed four tackles, while Frank Lomani missed five. 5
