Fans rally around Blues star Cameron Suafoa following major surgery to remove tumour
Blues back-row Cameron Suafoa has provided an important update on his recent cancer diagnosis, telling fans that he has received surgery to remove a tumour this past week.
Having previously recovered from the illness, Suafoa was re-diagnosed with Sarcoma back in March. Sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that originates in the bones and soft tissues which can cause pain and a noticeable lump under the skin.*
The 26-year-old initially took a step back from the sport in April 2024 as he completed radiation treatment for the cancer, but sadly the treatment – while successful at the time – has not proved to be permanent.
Suafoa speaks via The Blues’ social channels
Speaking via his club’s social media account, the talented former Maori All Black addressed fans with an optimistic and genuine message, saying:
“In March this year, I got the news nobody wants to hear that my sarcoma is back.
“This last week, I’ve undergone a massive surgery to resect another tumour and gained some metalware in the process.
“Rugby is once again on the back burner for me this year but I’ll always be @bluesrugbyteam and @harbourrugby.
“A massive thank you to Andy Johnston, Christine Goh and Alpesh Patel for their dedicated care throughout this process, as well as the Sarcoma Foundation NZ.
“I’m also incredibly grateful for all the support I have felt through this journey from my friends, family and the blues.
“As always, health comes first and check on your people. In a bit xx”
Treatment for sarcoma often involves surgery to remove the cancer, however, other treatments and medicines may include radiation therapy, ablation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy.*

Fans react with support to Suafoa’s cancer recovery journey
Fans from all over have reacted with support to Suafoa’s news, with many wishing him a full recovery and all the best wishes. One fan from the other side of the world said: “Sending huge hugs and prayers from Inverness Scotland”, while others added warm messages of support such as: “Wishing a speedy recovery champ”, and “Gutted for the big lad. Quick recovery chap.”
Suafoa’s cancer journey
Initially diagnosed in late 2023, Suafoa returned to rugby after being given the all-clear in May of 2024, going on to appear in multiple matches as the Blues won the Super Rugby title.
Prior to his initial ‘all-clear’ verdict, Suafoa explained what life was initially like living with his cancer.
“In the mornings, I am normally pretty good, because I just woke up, I’m full of energy. It’s normally after 12 or one when I tend to decline, fatigue-wise. I get real tired easily” he explained in a video shared by the Blues social channels in April 2024.
“Right now, it is what it is. I can’t change the fact I am going through this.
“Hopefully I can come back from this fitter and stronger.”
The same message, reflected today.
