Kevin Sorrell is leaving Saracens following a 30-year playing and coaching career at the London club.

The backs coach debuted in the midfield just as the sport turned professional in the mid-1990s, making more than 300 appearances until his retirement in 2010.

He then switched to coaching, starting in the academy before moving onto first-team duties and helping the Gallagher Premiership side win multiple league titles and European Cups.

Posting a message to social media, the 48-year-old wrote: “It was without doubt the toughest decision to come to but one I had to make with my head and not my heart. It is impossible to convey the gratitude and love I have for being associated with this club for the last 30 years in a few sentences.

“From where I started at Bramley Road to seeing us lift the European Cup was an incredible journey. A journey that allowed me the opportunity to play with and work with some of the greatest players to play the game; in the coaching team to work alongside some of the sharpest minds in the game and to witness day in and day out the diligence and effort of all those not front of house was a privilege.

“Thanks to the Saracens ownership, the board but special thanks must go to the Wray family for the support they have shown to my family and me. The word support is simply insufficient to convey the genuine care and kindness that they have invested throughout my time at the club.

“What a career it’s been…”

“Finally, to the people that have shared this journey with me the whole way, the supporters, you truly are the heartbeat of this club. It was one hell of a ride but it’s time to find something new to enjoy. Thank you.”

Sixth-place Saracens will next Saturday look to clinch a Premiership play-off spot when they host Bath in their final regular season match and news of Sorrell’s exit at the end of the campaign has generated numerous warm responses on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter:

Richard Hill: “What a career it’s been – an incredible journey as both player and coach at Saracens. It’s been an honour sharing so many years on the field with you and a best mate off it; here’s to everything you’ve achieved and what’s still to come.”

Simon Raiwalui: “Absolute Sarries club legend. Looking forward to seeing what the future holds for you and the family!”

Tony Diprose: “Good luck mate. Look forward to seeing what’s next.”

@RugbySaracens: “Farewell Super Kev. Player, coach, legend. One club, three decades. From centre on the pitch to guiding backs off it, our Kevin gave everything to his Saracens. Thank you. Good luck for your future. True Sarries great.”

Saracens Supporters Association: “30 years at Saracens. The very definition of boy to man. Black and red in the blood. Part of the fabric of the club. Sad to see Super Kev follow Phil Morrow out the door this summer. Two of the pillars of the successes we have enjoyed celebrating together. We can’t thank him enough.”
