Exeter Chiefs director of rugby Rob Baxter has remained tight-lipped over when Wallabies recruits Len Ikitau and Tom Hooper will make their debuts for the club, but has confirmed they are in full training ahead of Sunday’s clash with Harlequins.
The pair both impressed for Joe Schmidt’s side during this year’s Rugby Championship campaign and the British and Irish Lions series, and look set to make an immediate impact on the PREM.
They also join a list of Australian players to represent Exeter in recent years, following recent debutant Julian Heaven and fan favourites Scott Sio, Nic White and Dean Mumm.
‘We have the opportunity to select them’
Their arrivals have already generated a new feeling of excitement among the Exeter faithful, which only increased earlier this week following Hooper’s arrival at Sandy Park, but the boss is keeping everyone on the edge of their seat regarding any future involvement.
“They’ve been great,” said Baxter, with a rye smile on his face. “They’ve fitted in really well and are keen to get involved as soon as possible.
“Len’s been here a bit longer, so has had a bit of extra time to get acclimatised, but Tom has rocked up and is ready to go. He wants to get involved and has done everything he can do from minute one of turning up.
“Everyone looks excited to have them here, and we have the opportunity to select them. We’ve got to assess things, but they’re in full training like everyone else in the squad.”
Elsewhere, Exeter will also have Scott Sio, Joseph Dweba and Josh Hodge back available this weekend, with the trio returning from respective injuries and suspensions.
“Josh Hodge returns from suspension, Joseph Dweba had a minor knee thing in training, but he’s back available and Scott Sio is over his knee issue. We’re thickening out as we go along, which is pretty pleasing.”
However, they will be without Italian international Ross Vintcent, who has been stood down after a concussion in their defeat to Bristol Bears last weekend.
