Ex-Lions full-back shares ’emotional’ message ahead of Premiership final, thanking Johann van Graan for ‘reigniting the pride’ in Bath jersey

Former Bath fullback shares 'emotional' message ahead of final, thanking Van Graan for 'reigniting the pride' in the blue, black and white
Former Bath, England and Lions full-back Matt Perry has shared an emotional message on social media, paying tribute to the ‘heart-warming’ success of his former club.
With 221 appearances for the club, Perry was a major player in the early professional years of Bath rugby, most notably being a key part of his side winning the 1997/98 European Cup.
A club steeped in personal history
Speaking after Bath’s derby win over Bristol in the Premiership semi-final, Perry said he “couldn’t let the moment pass without sharing some reflections” on what the win meant to him as a former player with deep-rooted family connections to the club.
“My father, Brendan, and my grandfather, Idris, both played for Bath, making this win particularly special,” Perry said. “It’s also heart-warming to see the sons of my former teammates continuing the legacy as part of the team.”
It’s been many years since the 48-year-old pulled on the blue, black and white shirt, but his love for the club has never changed.
It was his performances in the West Country that enabled him to travel round the world in international colours and even tour with the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
“Having played 12 years for Bath Rugby, and been a supporter since I was young, I’ve experienced the highs and lows of this club – felt the roar of The Rec, the sting of narrow defeats, and the pride of wearing that blue, black, and white jersey. But last night’s semi-final win over Bristol? That was something special.
The derby win to end all derby wins
“Trailing at halftime, the boys demonstrated the kind of grit and belief that defines champions. Four second-half tries – scored by Hill, Cokanasiga, Muir, and Ojomoh – each one a testament to their determination. A 34-20 comeback that was about more than just points on the board; it was about heart, history, and hunger.
“To see this squad – led by Johann van Graan – march into the Premiership final after already lifting the Rugby Cup and Challenge Cup this season… it’s emotional. This isn’t just a team; it’s a family that’s fought its way back to the top after years in the wilderness.”
Echoing the sentiment displayed by many in the city of Bath currently, Perry concluded: “To the players, coaches, and everyone behind the scenes – thank you for reigniting the pride in the blue, black, and white. We couldn’t be prouder.”
