Ex-All Black opens up on ‘keeping things simple’ for flourishing Los Pumas star
Rodrigo Isgro has scored three tries in his first two outings this season.
Harlequins attack coach Nick Evans believes keeping things “simple” is allowing headline recruit Rodrigo Isgro to flourish, with the back hitting the ground running in the Premiership.
The Los Pumas ace only joined up with his new employers after the Rugby Championship, but he already has three tries to his name in the Quins quarters and has quickly caught the attention of fans across the league.
“Keep it really simple”
The back, who has also had a glittering career in Sevens, was at the heart of his side’s 36-19 victory over Exeter Chiefs last weekend, and speaking to Planet Rugby after the game, Quins coach Evans revealed they are still trying to find ways to use him effectively following his mid-season move to the capital.
“I think we can be honest and say we’re still finding ways we can use him,” Evans said. “It’s only been two or three weeks.”
“It’s not easy for him to come into a new environment, he’s such a great person but there’s a bit of a language barrier and he’s still learning the new defence and attack systems.”
Evans also believes the key to his success has been using him in a “simple” way.
“We’ve tried to keep it really simple and just give him the ball in space first and foremost,” Evans continued. “He’s also got a super strength in the air, you saw it last week with those ariel opportunities.
“So as many opportunities we can to get him on the ball then he’ll have an influence on the game.”
The Los Pumas winger is one of a number of international players drafted in at the Stoop. Wales and British and Irish Lions duo Leigh Halfpenny and Wyn Jones have both joined the club, as has dual USA and Samoan international Titi Lamositele.
The Pumas ace has hit the ground running since coming to the Premiership, scoring a brace in his debut against Bath and added to his tally with another fine score against the Chiefs at Sandy Park.
The elusive back made his debut for Los Pumas in the 2023 Rugby Championship, and has gone on to win four caps in the XVs game. However, the bulk of his career has been spent in Sevens, and he is widely regarded as one of the best in the format. During his time in Sevens, he was named World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year in 2023 and has also represented Argentina at both the 2020 and 2024 Olympics.
