England international George Martin will swap the East Midlands for North London next season, after putting pen to paper on a deal to join Saracens from the start of next season.

The announcement of his switch to the Capital follows months of speculation over his future, with him previously linked with a switch to Sale Sharks.

Martin’s move to Saracens is also a major sign of intent from the six-time PREM champions, with the forward set to rekindle his England lock partnership with captain Maro Itoje at club level.

He is, however, nursing a shoulder injury picked up on England duty, and has not taken to the field since February.

Saracens win the race for Martin

Commenting on the signing of Martin, Saracens director of rugby, Mark McCall, said: “George is a highly driven young player who we are delighted to welcome to the club.

“His attributes and character will complement and add value to the group and we are looking forward to him realising his potential in the years ahead.”

The England international added: “I am looking forward to the next chapter of my rugby journey.”

‘He has chosen a different direction for the next stage of his career’

His decision to leave the East Midlands has not gone down well with his current employers, Leicester Tigers, with head coach Geoff Parling detailing his disappointment at losing the academy graduate.

“We would have liked George to stay with the club as he’s a top-quality player developed through our academy alongside many of the current team,” he said.

“While we offered George a competitive deal to remain with Tigers, he has chosen a different direction for the next stage of his career.

“We thank him for his time with us and wish him well.”
