Beno Obano was red carded in the Premiership final.

England prop Beno Obano has been slapped with a four-week ban after he attended an independent disciplinary hearing following his red card in the recent Premiership final.

Obano was sent off in the 22nd minute of a gripping contest at Twickenham Stadium last Saturday as his Bath team had to play three-quarters of the match with 14 players.

However, the West Country outfit put in an impressive showing that had Northampton Saints on the ropes for large spells before Alex Mitchell’s late try won them the title.

Four-game ban

Ultimately, Bath fell to a 25-21 defeat and since the match Obano has been awaiting his hearing, with the loosehead prop’s punishment confirmed in a statement on Thursday.

“The case of Beno Obano, Bath Rugby, was heard by an independent disciplinary panel chaired by Matthew Weaver KC sitting with Leon Lloyd and Mitch Read,” it read.

“He was shown a red card for dangerous tackling, contrary to World Rugby Law 9.13, during a game against Northampton Saints on 8 June 2024.

“The player admitted an act of foul play but disputed that it reached the red card threshold. The panel upheld the charge and the player received a four-match ban which will be reduced to three if he makes an application to World Rugby to undertake the Coaching Intervention Programme (CIP).

“Given the timing of this disciplinary hearing at the end of the domestic season, it is not immediately obvious which would be the next applicable meaningful fixtures for the purposes of sanction. These will be confirmed in due course.”

Indeed, Bath’s season has now concluded as the focus shifts to England ahead of their clashes with Eddie Jones’ Japan in Tokyo and New Zealand in Dunedin and Auckland.

‘I don’t believe it was foul play’ – Johann van Graan weighs in on decisive Beno Obano red in Premiership final

Obano was left out of England’s touring squad that was announced on Monday as it was clear that he would be sidelined for a chunk of their upcoming internationals.

That has transpired as the Bath front-rower unfortunately cannot build on what has been an impressive club campaign with the Premiership finalists on the Test arena.

England head coach Steve Borthwick selected Sale Sharks’ Bevan Rodd and Harlequins pair Fin Baxter and Joe Marler as the loosehead prop options in his squad for the tour.
