England player ratings: Marcus Smith and Owen Farrell axis kicks into gear late on as Red Rose salvage draw

Following a dramatic 25-25 draw with New Zealand in their Autumn Nations Series Test at Twickenham on Saturday, here are the player ratings for England.
15 Freddie Steward: Always strong under the high ball and stood up well. Played a key role in the comeback. 7
14 Jack Nowell: Targeted all day with the cross-field kick and didn’t adapt at all well. 3
13 Manu Tuilagi: One run aside, he wasn’t really in the game. 5
12 Owen Farrell (c): Was one of England’s better performers when the rest were struggling. Stepped up superbly late on. 7
11 Jonny May: Handled the All Blacks’ kicking onslaught much better than Nowell and was also a threat in attack. 7
10 Marcus Smith: Probably his best game for England. Decision-making was excellent throughout, even if his team-mates kept messing it up – apart from the final 10 minutes. 8
9 Jack van Poortvliet: Dreadful day for the young scrum-half. Bad error for the intercept and then got caught a couple of times. 3
Forwards struggle against impressive All Blacks pack
8 Billy Vunipola: Another to falter. Made numerous errors which halted a number of promising England attacks. 3
7 Tom Curry: An absolute workhouse but didn’t have the impact he would have liked at the contact area. 6
6 Sam Simmonds: Did well out of position. Carried hard all day and made a few dents in the New Zealand defence. 7
5 Jonny Hill: Really struggled to make an impact in the loose. Stole a couple of lineouts but looked unsure of himself in the other areas of the game. 4
4 Maro Itoje: Some good carries but was outplayed by the All Blacks second-rows. Didn’t have his usual presence in the loose. 5
3 Kyle Sinckler: Some good skills on the gain line but didn’t make much headway at scrum time or in the loose. 6
2 Luke Cowan-Dickie: Defended well and lineout was solid, but didn’t impact the game enough. 6
1 Ellis Genge: See his front-row colleagues. Had a great duel with Tyrel Lomax but ended up on the losing side. 5
Replacements: They were all magnificent. Ben Youngs, Mako Vunipola, try-scorer Will Stuart and David Ribbans all added plenty and saved the game for England. 10
