England player ratings: Joe Cokanasiga and Guy Porter fail Rugby World Cup auditions
Joe Cokanasiga dropping high ball against Wales in Rugby World Cup warm-up.
Following a 20-9 defeat to Wales in their Rugby World Cup warm-up in Cardiff on Saturday, here are the player ratings for England.
15 Freddie Steward: Majestic under the high ball once again and counter-attacked well. England’s best player. 8
14 Max Malins: Didn’t deal with the grubber through for the second try and just doesn’t offer a whole lot with ball in hand at this level. A smart player who reads the game well and has an eye for the try-line, but wasn’t really a factor here. 5
13 Joe Marchant: In a game England created very little, Marchant’s lines of running at least gave them momentum on occasion. A good performance from the centre. 7
12 Guy Porter: A player who was a surprising inclusion in the wider training squad and, on this evidence, shouldn’t be named in the final 33. Dropped the ball twice under little pressure. 3
11 Joe Cokanasiga: Dreadful. Couldn’t take a high ball and was awful in defence. Considering Steve Borthwick wants his wingers to do the basics well, we can’t quite believe Cokanasiga was involved in the wider squad. 3
10 Marcus Smith: Did his best and showed touches of class. Smith created openings, but his team-mates kept knocking on. 7
9 Danny Care: Box-kicking was pretty good, but option-taking and his speed of service in the Wales half was subpar. 5
Pack lose traction after the break
8 Alex Dombrandt: The odd moment which hinted that he’s a Test player, but they were few and far between. 5
7 Tom Pearson: Jac Morgan’s hit on Pearson, which sent him into reverse, was almost the defining image in the game. The openside did some good things to suggest promise, but there were also a few errors. 6
6 Lewis Ludlam: One of England’s better performers once again after a fine Six Nations. He wasn’t as influential in the second period, but he was one of the team’s standouts. 7
5 George Martin: A bit disappointing all things considered. A real physical presence, who is also a fine athlete, but he didn’t throw that weight around enough. 5
4 David Ribbans: Got some go-forward in the first half, and the lineout was certainly much better when he was on. 6
3 Will Stuart: Had the edge in the set-piece and a couple of rumbles in the loose, but England’s tighthead issues go on. 6
2 Jamie Blamire: His performance looked much better when Theo Dan came on, in that the lineout at least was comparatively smooth with Blamire on the field. 5
1 Ellis Genge (c): Scrummaged well and was a consistent presence in the loose. Everyone knows he is a top-class prop but, with World Cup places on the line, this wasn’t really about how he performed. 7
Replacements: There were a couple of good carries from Tom Willis, but they were mainly on the back foot as the set-piece faltered following the substitutions. In particular, it was a debut to forget from Dan. 3
