England forward announces shock retirement on eve of Six Nations

England loosehead prop Mako Vunipola has announced his retirement from the international game, less than a month before the start of this year’s Six Nations.

The shock news brings an end to the prop’s impressive Test career that saw him play 71 times for his country and win nine caps for the British & Irish Lions over three tours.

Vunipola made his international debut in 2012 and became a vital player in the England side over the years, with his mobility and skill-set two of his qualities around the field.

Missed the World Cup

Back surgery unfortunately ruled the 32-year-old out of the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France as Joe Marler, Ellis Genge and Bevan Rodd were picked as loosehead options.

It was thought, due to injuries in the number one position, that Vunipola would return to Test duty this Six Nations. However, this shock news means his England career is over.

“It’s been an honour to have represented my country but all good things must come to an end,” the experienced Saracens stalwart said on Instagram on Friday afternoon.

“The time has come to step away now. There have been lots of highs and lows. Would love to thank everyone who have helped me along the way.

“To my wife @alex_vunipola thank you for taking care of our family and all your support. Words don’t do it justice.

“To my parents I’m eternally grateful for all you have sacrificed for me to be here. Malo aupito and Ofa atu. God is good.”

Vunipola is currently serving a four-match suspension for a dangerous tackle made while on duty for Saracens against Newcastle Falcons on Saturday, December 30.

The ban ends just before the start of the Six Nations Championship, making the prop available for England’s opening game against Italy in Rome on Saturday, February 3.

Ellis Genge fitness boost

The retirement of Vunipola is at least cushioned somewhat by news that Genge is “ready to go” for England in their campaign, according to Bristol boss Pat Lam.

The news is a huge front-row fitness boost for England head coach Steve Borthwick.

Genge, an England captaincy contender following Owen Farrell’s decision to miss the Six Nations, has not played for his club since early December due to a hamstring injury.

“Ellis has a chance of starting the Six Nations. He is right on track,” said a positive Lam.

“He has started running and will probably join us in training next week. The medical team and Ellis have done a great job.

“He looks bigger as well, and one thing you can do when you are injured is get bigger, stronger, faster and more powerful.

“He will not play for us next weekend, and then he is with England so will not be with us for Bath (on January 27).

“I do not know if they would release him for the Bath game because they will be away abroad. That is up to Steve, but he is ready to go for England.”
