Early twist emerges in Bundee Aki transfer links as confusion reigns over Ireland star’s IRFU contract
Bundee Aki has reportedly opened talks with Toulon over a possible move to the south of France but an apparent clause in his contract may scupper those plans.
The Ireland centre has been linked with a move away from Galway after French outlet Midi Olympique claimed that the 34-year-old had met Toulon representatives via a video call.
Officially, Aki is currently contracted to the Irish Rugby Football Union until 2025, which he extended following his stunning performances at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
The midfield powerhouse also went on to play a key role in the 2024 Six Nations as Andy Farrell’s men claimed yet another title.
Contract confusion
Despite his advancing years, the Connacht star continues to perform at a very high level and, as a result, Toulon seem to have targeted him as a key addition for next year.
But they may have to fork out more money than they would have initially anticipated if they are to bring him to the Top 14.
According to Independent.ie, Aki is actually contracted to 2026 rather than 2025 – different to what was officially announced back in 2023.
That is reportedly due to a clause that allows the IRFU to extend that deal by an extra year, an option the governing body appear to have exercised.
Should that be the case then Toulon would likely need to pay a transfer fee to buy the Ireland centre out of his contract.

Toulon departures
Midi had earlier reported that Toulon reached out to the centre as they look for a replacement for Leicester Fainga’anuku, who will move back to New Zealand next year.
It also stated that Samoa international Duncan Paia’aua is also likely to depart, while Mathieu Smaili and Jeremy Sinzelle are coming to the end of their contracts.
The French giants, who won the Heineken Cup in three successive years between 2013 and 2015, are seeking a world-class centre and Aki certainly fits the bill.
The player may also be very tempted by the opportunity to play in France. Although he is settled in Ireland, the Connacht linchpin is now 34 and will turn 35 before the season is out, which means that Aki could well be convinced by one final lucrative payday at Toulon.
