For many youngsters, their parents are their heroes, especially for those in professional sport as they seek to emulate their mums and dads further down the line, but not Brad Shields’ son, Franco, it seems.

Hurricanes captain Brad Shields was joined by his kids for the post-match interview following their 32-24 victory over Moana Pasifika on Friday.

After Shields had answered the questions on the game, the interviewer duly asked the back-row’s children for their favourite player.

Franco’s funny answer

Daughter Charley responded as expected with “daddy”, before Franco had his say and without hesitation hilariously said: “Jordie Barrett”.

Shields duly laughed along with the interviewer, who then chimed in with “Dad’s got some work to do there,” before sending it back to the studio.

Barrett wasn’t playing on Friday as the Hurricanes chose to rest a number of key players, but Shields obviously was as they – for the time being at least – moved back to the top of the Super Rugby Pacific table.

They were pushed all the way by Moana, who still reside in the bottom half of the table, but the hosts managed to come out on top.

The two sides scored four tries apiece, with Raymond Tuputupu, Siale Lauaki, Richard Judd and Peter Lakai going over for the New Zealand outfit.

Sione Mafileo, Abraham Pole, Fine Inisi and Alamanda Motuga responded for Moana, but they failed to earn a losing bonus-point.

Kicking the difference

It was the kicking that made the difference as Aidan Morgan added an extra conversion – scoring three to the visitors’ two – and also scored two penalties.

“That was a crazy game, we’re happy to get through that one,” Shields said.

“When you let Moana get up a bit of steam and energy they are a difficult team to handle, but I am proud of the way the boys stuck at it.”

The Hurricanes moved above the Blues and to the summit following their 10th win of the campaign, but the Aucklanders have an opportunity to regain their place at the top.

Vern Cotter’s men take on the Highlanders on Saturday and know that a victory of any kind will lift them above their North Island rivals.

As for the ‘Canes, they will focus on improving their performance when they take on the Chiefs away from home in Round 14 of the competition.

“We’ll have to tighten our screws a bit coming into the next game,” Shields added.
