Canterbury go top

Canterbury secured a home ITM Cup semi-final thanks to an outstanding 41-25 victory over Tasman at Trafalgar Park in Nelson on Saturday.

Canterbury romped to the top of the standings with a brilliant attacking display and a top-class performance from captain Tom Taylor, who scored 21 points.

Canterbury ran in five tries over Tasman's two. A tightly-contested first half ended with Canterbury going into half time with a 17-10 lead after Rob Thompson doted down in 37th minute.

Soon after the start of the second half Taylor scored a brilliant try after a nice pop pass from Ryan Crotty to give his team a 14 point cushion.

Tasman Gallantly fought back with two tries respectively by Kaetau Havili and Shane Christie in the fourth quarter but Tasman left their run too late and the mistakes mounted as they were forced to play catch-up. Canterbury soon hit back as Thompson ran in for his second try in the 64th minute.

Cameron McIntyre's try in the dying moments of the game was the nail in the coffin for Tasman who played catch-up rugby for the most of the second stanza.
