Caelan Doris injured? The three front runners to lead the British and Irish Lions in Australia
Caelen Doris injury
It wasn’t officially confirmed that Caelan Doris would captain the British and Irish Lions this summer, but it would have taken a brave person to bet against him.
Captain of both the Irish national side and Leinster, Doris has all the credentials to lead a world class Lions side. This is, however, subject to his recent injury scare, one that Planet Rugby believes to be more serious than originally thought.
In fact, it is understood that after suffering a shoulder injury in the Investec Champions Cup semi-final defeat to Northampton Saints, Doris will be out for between four and six months following his operation.
This leaves Andy Farrell with a difficult decision, does he hope for the Irishman to make an Alun Wyn Jones style recovery, or does he put his trust in one of the other captaincy contenders?

British and Irish Lions captaincy contenders
Let’s see which players top the charts:
Maro Itoje
The leading contender at one stage is now truly back in contention. Having been confirmed as England captain at the start of 2025, replacing Jamie George, Itoje has truly stepped up to the responsibility with some of the best performances of his career.
Touted as a future England and British and Irish Lions captain from an early age, the giant second-rower has hit the peak of his powers, ready to to grab a hold of the greatest honour of all. Named the 2021 Lions Player of the Series, it will be hard to look elsewhere.
Jac Morgan
Less likely to be given the mantle than Itoje due to his younger age and Wales’ poor performances, but Morgan is expected to be a leader within the group, capable of standing out with exemplary performances even within struggling teams.
He will be a great leader when things are not going their way.
Dan Sheehan
Likely to be the first choice hooker under Farrell’s Lions, the Irish try-scoring machine is arguably the greatest front man in the world currently.
At 6’3″ and boasting remarkable mobility and strength, Sheehan brings a unique blend of athleticism and skill to the hooker position. An indispensable force for both Leinster and Ireland.
Having captained Ireland against Wales in February 2025, his leadership qualities are there for all to see. The 26-year-old could get the nod from his international coach.
