Bath player Sam Burgess has admitted to feeling the nerves before making his Union debut on Friday against Harlequins.

The 25-year-old was making his first appearance since arriving at the club four weeks ago.

Burgess has recovered from a fractured cheekbone and was named on the bench, coming on for Argentina international Horacio Agulla in the second.

The Rugby League star made a couple of cameos in his brief appearance but was delighted to get out on the pitch.

“I was nervous on the bench but I really enjoyed it,” Burgess told BT Sport.

“The monkey is off my back now and I can knuckle down and focus on improving.

“It was good, I enjoyed it, got the last 15/20 minutes, it was exciting and I’ve been doing quite a lot of practice.

“It was nice to get on the field with the guys.

“The guys around me have been pretty good, everybody has been talking me through it in training and it was good to get a win and play under the lights at the Rec on my debut.”
