British & Irish Lions’ ‘expectation’ met as Joe Schmidt adheres to ‘tour agreement’ with Reds boosted by Wallabies stars
Joe Schmidt has adhered to the 'tour agreement' with the British and Irish Lions.
Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt has released two players from his wider squad back to the Queensland Reds ahead of the Super Rugby Pacific team’s July 2 clash against the British and Irish Lions.
The Lions kick-off their tour Down Under with a fixture against the Western Force this weekend while Australia continue their preparations for their Test match against Fiji on July 6 in Newcastle.
Schmidt initially named a 36-man squad for the fixture against the Flying Fijians but confirmed that Nick de Crespigny, Dylan Pietsch, Tom Robertson, Darcy Swain and Nic White would remain with the Force to prepare for this Saturday’s game against the Lions before joining the Wallabies squad.
Schmidt releases two Wallabies
This is part of the tour agreement between the Wallabies and Lions which has been a hot topic of late, particularly after B&I Lions chief Ben Calveley warned Schmidt and Rugby Australia about a breach of contract.
“The agreement is very clear, Test players have to be released to play in fixtures leading into that series. That is our expectation,” Calveley stated upon arrival in Australia.
Wallabies boss Schmidt hit back at those remarks on Tuesday, but is sticking to the agreement with hooker Matt Faessler and centre Hunter Paisami released back to the Reds and will be available for selection to head coach Les Kiss.
Faessler and Paisami are two of eight Reds’ players who were included in the Wallabies squad along with loose forwards Fraser McReight and Harry Wilson, prop Zane Nonggorr, half-backs Tate McDermott and Tom Lynagh and winger Filipo Daugunu.
This suggests that the six players that remain with the Wallabies will likely feature in the match day 23 against Fiji, while Schmidt also noted that several Reds players who didn’t earn call-ups played for Australia last year and require game time if they are to be included further down the line. The likes of Seru Uru and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto would fit into this bracket.

“That’s what we want”
Josh Canham, Josh Nasser, Angus Blyth, Josh Flook and Jock Campbell are among the Test representatives set to run out in the Queensland colours against the Lions.
Reds scrum-half McDermott, who has not been released back to Queensland, hopes his club will be competitive against the B&I Lions. “That’s what we want,” McDermott said.
“We want not only the Wallabies playing entertaining rugby and going toe-to-toe with the British and Irish Lions, but we want our Super clubs to do the same thing. I can only speak from a Queensland point of view, but that’s the goal.”
