British and Irish Lions assistant coach Simon Easterby has been banned from driving for six months after being caught speeding in England last August.

The interim Ireland boss was detected exceeding the 70mph speed limit on a dual carriageway in Bodmin, Cornwall.

Easterby, who will help Andy Farrell select the Lions squad that will be announced in London on May 8 for the upcoming tour to Australia, appeared before Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

According to the BBC, the Vale of Glamorgan resident had the court consider his “work and family commitments that require him to drive.

“But the court did not find exceptional hardship and the rugby coach was told he would be disqualified from driving for six months.”

Aside from the driving disqualification, Easterby learned he must also pay a fine as well as a surcharge.

“The court heard the figure came to a total of £1,345, which has to be paid within the next week.”

Six Nations title hat-trick came a cropper in March

The former Ireland international, who has been linked with the head coach vacancy in Wales following the February exit of Warren Gatland, guided the Irish to third place in this year’s Guinness Six Nations after taking charge on an interim basis from the sabbatical-taking Farrell.

The 49-year-old enjoyed an unbeaten February, but his ambition to coach Ireland to an unprecedented hat-trick of successive Six Nations titles came a cropper in March when they were blown away in Dublin by eventual champions France. They later squeaked over the line against Italy in their final match of the Championship.

But, despite the whimper their campaign ended on, Ireland are well-represented within Farrell’s coaching staff, with Easterby being joined by John Fogarty, Andrew Goodman and Johnny Sexton. Sexton will also take up a role within Farrell’s Ireland staff from next season.
