Bristol Bears sign experienced English-qualified prop to fill Kyle Sinckler’s void

Lovejoy Chawatama will bolster the Bristol Bears' prop stocks as Kyle Sinckler heads to Toulon.

The Bristol Bears have announced the signing of an experienced English-qualified prop to fill Kyle Sinckler’s void ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Sinckler is set to join the exodus of English players to France next season, joining Top 14 giants Toulon along with fellow international Lewis Ludlam.

With the club needing to bolster their tighthead prop stocks and have done so with the signing of Harlequins front rower Lovejoy Chawatama.

The Zimbawean-born prop is qualified to play for England and played for the England Students previously and returns to the West Country having studied at the University West of England.

Bristol boss Pat Lam spoke highly of his new signing, who he believes fits the Bears’ systems well.

“Lovejoy was one of the most consistent performers in the Premiership during his time with London Irish and his style of play and skills are well aligned to the way we want to play at the Bears,” Lam said.

“As we continue to build our young and exciting squad, it’s key to have established and experienced Premiership players in specialist positions.

“Lovejoy has shown his quality and durability at the tighthead position and he will be a valuable asset for the continued development of our exciting young Bristolian tighthead props George Kloska and Jimmy Halliwell.”

Chawatama joins the Bears from Harlequins who joined the club from London Irish as injury cover for the 2023/24 season and has made seven appearances for the Famous Quarters to date.

During his time at London Irish, he registered 93 appearances for the club and enjoyed stints with Clifton RFC, London Scottish and London Welsh.

Chawatama said: “I’m thrilled to be joining Bristol Bears for the 2024/25 season – it’s a fantastic club with rich history, passionate fans, and ambition.

“It feels like a full-circle moment for me, having spent four years at UWE Bristol as a student and amateur rugby player.

“It’s a place I have fond memories of. I’m excited to bring my family here and make more memories on and off the pitch.”

Meanwhile, Bristol have also announced that Argentine back-rower Santiago Grondona has signed a contract extension at Bristol Bears.

The 14 Test cap international is yet to make his debut for the Bears due to a knee injury but the club state that he is “progressing well in his rehabilitation and is expected to return in April.”

“Santiago sustained an unfortunate injury during the World Cup warm-up fixtures, but has shown his professionalism and diligence throughout his rehab,” Lam added.

“He’s somebody who can operate across the back row and in the second row and, at 25 years old, is an experienced head on young shoulders who has played and performed at the very highest level.

“Santi has a point to prove and wants to repay the Bears for the faith that the club have shown in getting him back. He’s loving his time in Bristol with his brother Ben and eager to make an impact.”
