Blues star Cameron Suafoa fighting cancer cheers on teammates from bed in emotional video

Blues star Cameron Suafoa was supporting his side from a hospital bed this weekend, as he continues to recover from major surgery following a recent cancer diagnosis.

A video, shared by his wife, was posted on the Blues‘ social channels for all to see. It showed the talented back-rower cheering his side on as they camped on the Chiefs’ line, before winning 20-19 in the Super Rugby play-offs.

Having previously recovered from the illness, Suafoa was re-diagnosed with Sarcoma back in March. Sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that originates in the bones and soft tissues, which can cause pain and a noticeable lump under the skin.*

He initially took a step back from the sport in April 2024 as he completed radiation treatment for the cancer, but sadly, the treatment, while successful at the time, did not prove to be permanent.

A message to fans

In May, Suafoa spoke to fans via the Blues’ social media, saying: “In March this year, I got the news nobody wants to hear that my sarcoma is back.

“This last week, I’ve undergone a massive surgery to resect another tumour and gained some metalware in the process.

“Rugby is once again on the back burner for me this year but I’ll always be @bluesrugbyteam and @harbourrugby.

“A massive thank you to Andy Johnston, Christine Goh and Alpesh Patel for their dedicated care throughout this process, as well as the Sarcoma Foundation NZ.

“I’m also incredibly grateful for all the support I have felt through this journey from my friends, family and the blues.

“As always, health comes first and check on your people. In a bit xx”

Fan reaction on X

Upon sharing the video of Suafoa supporting his team at the weekend, fans were quick to show their support for the 27-year-old.

One fan said: ‘Love it. Looking forward to seeing him healthy and back in the Blues.” Another dedicated the win to their sidelined star: “That one was for you toko…get well soon… we’re all with you in this fight when one of us is down we’re all there to pick you up…#BluesBrothers.”

One fan looked to put things in perspective, saying: “Good on ya, mate. Best wishes for your health recovery. Stay strong – and patient! That’s why you are called “patient”! It all takes time.”
