Bernard Jackman: Bundee Aki outburst part of widespread Ireland referee problem
Referee Eoghan Cross chatting to Connacht (Cian Prendergast) and Leinster (Caelan Doris) captains, and banned centre Bundee Aki.
Bernard Jackman claims that Bundee Aki’s outburst at the match officials last weekend is not a one-off and shows a wider problem within Irish rugby.
The Ireland centre was visibly frustrated with the refereeing in Connacht’s defeat to Leinster and it led to him overstepping the mark.
Aki has since been banned by an independent panel and will miss the next four matches, including the national team’s opening three Six Nations encounters.
He was dropped by Ireland before the outcome of that disciplinary hearing was known with the IRFU condemning his actions in a strong statement.
A widespread issue
While the midfield powerhouse has been the one to significantly cross that line, his provincial and Test team-mates have been close to doing the same, according to Jackman.
The former hooker believes that the referees have become now frustrated by the Irish players and are starting to take firmer action.
“I think what will be really worrying for Farrell is that it wasn’t just the interpros where you had Irish referees who you could say have just had enough of this, you saw it in Europe as well with non-Irish referees,” Jackman told the RTE Rugby podcast.
“It seems within the refereeing fraternity that there’s been a reaction to what’s been constant. When you’re commentating on games, you have a clear audio of the ref mic than the TV viewer and it’s incredible the amount of chat from Irish players across the board, not just the captain.
“I think we’re probably overdoing it captaincy-wise in terms of pressurising referees to look at things. It’s non-stop.
“In the background, every ruck there’s four or five Irish players in a provincial jersey shouting and telling the referee what to do.
“Even the one at the weekend for Connacht, which was really interesting. Eoghan Cross, the referee, he warned Jack Carty and Bundee, and you could hear by his tone, see by his body language that he was on the edge of saying: ‘Enough’s enough’. He warned them and a couple of plays later, he has to penalise Bundee for questioning the decision.”

Leinster’s backchat
There is a certain irony that Aki’s suspension came following a game with Leinster, who themselves have had run-ins with officialdom.
During the 2023/24 season, the Dublin-based outfit went in with co-captains, but James Ryan was effectively removed from his position by referee Matthew Carley during an Investec Champions Cup game with La Rochelle due to too much backchat.
What’s more players that cross the line tend to have the extra embarrassment of being incorrect, as shown by Aki last Saturday.
“Actually, the decision that Bundee was questioning was the right decision by the referee; Bundee was wrong,” Jackman added.
“Obviously, he was frustrated not to have started in the biggest game in Connacht’s history – he nearly built that stand with his actions on the field – but he brought that frustration onto the field.
“It affected his play I think – I certainly think he was distracted – but if Farrell wants to show clips of this costing teams and Irish players overstepping the mark, he has an abundance of them over the last four weeks.”
