Wing Rodrigo Isgro playing for Argentina v Australia in 2023.

Following a 34-31 victory over Australia in their Rugby Championship clash in Sydney on Saturday, here are the player ratings for Argentina.

15 Emiliano Boffelli: Solid but so far not as influential as last year, where he was a global star. 6

14 Rodrigo Isgro: An outstanding debut from the Sevens star, who was excellent under the high ball and a threat when handed possession on the right. Should have scored in the second half but the only blot on his copybook. 8

13 Lucio Cinti: Much better in the outside centre position where he has more space to stretch the defence. Doesn’t have the power or playmaking qualities to operate in the tighter exchanges. 7

12 Jeronimo de la Fuente: A real solid presence in the midfield, who marshals that backline really well. Defends well, passes well and takes the right decisions. 7

11 Mateo Carreras: So dangerous when given an inch of room. After the disappointment of last week, great to see him get more ball and showed his class with a superb try. 7

10 Santiago Carreras: Played really well for the most part and caused problems in the Wallabies defence with his timing of the pass. Also a threat when taking on the Australian rearguard. 8

9 Gonzalo Bertranou: See Carreras as he combined superbly with his half-back partner. Slick service throughout and accurate box-kicking as they put the Aussies under pressure. 8

Key forwards step up

8 Juan Martin Gonzalez: Another pretty underwhelming game until he popped up with the winning try. 6

7 Santiago Grondona: Tackled his heart out but not as much as impact in the carry. 6

6 Pablo Matera: A much better performance from the outstanding flanker, who carried hard, was excellent in defence and was effective at the breakdown. 8

5 Tomas Lavanini: We thought it would be typical Lavanini when he gave away a brainless penalty early on, but the lock was excellent. Won one crucial turnover at the maul and put himself about on both sides of the ball. 8

4 Matias Alemanno: Lineout was much better this week while he also contributed more in the loose. The second-row worked well as a unit this week. 7

3 Francisco Gomez Kodela: The latest tighthead to be tried and the latest to struggle in the set-piece, but he did some good work in the loose. If Argentina get their scrum sorted, they will be competitive with the better teams. 6

2 Julian Montoya (c): Like Matera, he needed to step up after last week and did so. Lineout was solid and his efforts in the loose were much better. 7

1 Thomas Gallo: Love watching him carry but his scrummaging work isn’t quite good enough at the moment. 6

Replacements: A mixed bag. Lucas Paulos did well but the replacement props struggled and Nicolas Sanchez will be thankful his team-mates dug him out of a hole after his intercept pass for Mark Nawaqanitawase’s try. 5
