Argentina player ratings: Bench impact almost snatches unlikely Rugby Championship triumph

Colin Newboult

Following their 36-20 defeat to South Africa in their Rugby Championship Test in Buenos Aires on Saturday, here’s the player ratings for Argentina.

15 Juan Cruz Mallia: Some nice moments but not the best of the back three. 6

14 Emiliano Boffelli: Good in the second half. His aerial work got his side on the front foot after the break and he was accurate off the tee once again. 7

13 Matias Orlando: Ran hard and became increasingly influential as the match went on. 6

12 Jeronimo de la Fuente: The same as Orlando, although his hard running made a few more indents. 7

11 Lucio Cinti: Quiet and struggled in the air. Yet to truly convince at Test level. 5

10 Santiago Carreras: Like Damian Willemse, is ultimately a full-back playing at 10 and produced a similar display to the Springbok. Some good things but not great control. 6

9 Gonzalo Bertranou: Really struggled in his time on the field as the Argentina pack went backwards. 5

Marcos Kremer and bench leads second half revival

8 Pablo Matera: Surprisingly quiet before the break but very much grew in influence. 7

7 Marcos Kremer: A big part of Argentina’s second-half resurgence. Played with real intensity after the interval. 8

6 Juan Martin Gonzalez: Struggled to exert the same influence he has in previous Rugby Championship encounters. 6

5 Tomas Lavanini: Has improved immeasurably in 2022, but this was almost back to the Lavanini of old. Not necessarily in ill-discipline but more his inability to actually catch the ball. 5

4 Matias Alemanno: Less mistake-prone than his lock partner but didn’t have a great impact. 6

3 Eduardo Bello: Struggled to make an impact around the field. 5

2 Julian Montoya (c): Once again a manful performance. Fronted up and was a nuisance at the breakdown. 7

1 Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro: Won a couple of penalties against Frans Malherbe but ultimately Argentina just couldn’t get enough impact from the props in the first half. 5

Replacements: Like Australia on Thursday, the bench impact almost secured an unlikely win. Thomas Gallo, Tomas Cubelli and Matias Moroni were all brilliant. 8
