All Blacks veteran feels ‘young and energised’ after retirement U-turn
All Blacks hooker Dane Coles.
Veteran All Blacks hooker Dane Coles has revealed that he has no regrets over his decision to come out of retirement to join Japanese outfit Kubota Spears Funabashi.
Early in 2023, Coles announced that he would retire after the Rugby World Cup in France but he changed his mind after the global showpiece to take up Kubota Spears’ offer after their first choice hooker Malcolm Marx sustained a serious knee injury during a Springbok training session at the World Cup.
Experienced campaigner
Coles played in 90 Tests for New Zealand between 2012 and 2023 and made his last appearance for the three-time world champions during their World Cup quarter-final win over Ireland in Paris recently.
The 36-year-old was recently unveiled alongside another new Kubota Spears recruit, Wales full-back Liam Williams, and said he plans to have fun when the Japan Rugby League One campaign kicks off on Saturday.
“I’m glad I’ve taken it, it’s only an extra six months,” Coles told AFP. “I’m going to give everything I’ve got and have a bit of fun with it.”
Coles is set to feature for Kubota Spears throughout their campaign after it was confirmed that Marx would be ruled for the entire season.
“I’ve only been here a week and I feel like, maybe not a 21-year-old, but I feel young and energised by the group,” said Coles.
“It’s completely different to New Zealand but it’s a lot of energy, a lot of laughter and a lot of hard work, which is something I’ve really enjoyed so far.”
Kubota Spears head coach Frans Ludeke, who has been linked with the still-vacant Japan national team job, believes bringing in Coles would help his team greatly during the upcoming season.
Different style of play
“Dane changed the image of hookers,” he said of the former Hurricanes hooker who scored 23 tries for the All Blacks.
“Normally, hookers were big at the scrums and set-pieces but the way he plays is like a loose forward.
“He’s got an amazing skill set.”
