All Blacks player ratings: Debutant sends ‘warning’ to Rieko Ioane after ‘remarkably’ good shift

Billy Proctor on the charge for the All Blacks.

Following the All Blacks’ 47-5 win over Fiji in San Diego, here are our player ratings for the New Zealand side.

Ratings

15 Beauden Barrett: Ever present on attack and unsurprisingly bagged two try assists on the night. His ability to complement other playmakers like Damian McKenzie in attack is a superpower and it was on show yet again from the classy veteran. 8

14 Sevu Reece: The wing went over for a try in the second period in a shift where he looked for work often and made few errors with the ball he did have. 6

13 Billy Proctor: Player of the match on debut and some warning to Rieko Ioane that his jersey is not safe. Proctor looked potent as if he was going to cut through the defence with every carry, beating eight defenders and nearly making 100 metres with the ball. This all culminated in a try and two try assists for a man who has just made Scott Robertson’s selection process a lot harder. A remarkably good start to his Test career. 9

12 Anton Lienert-Brown: The centre just oozes class in everything he does. Lienert-Brown evidently loved being back in the starting XV and got the ball in hand all game long with a whopping 17 carries where he beat eight defenders. The metres he made were critical in several tries and on defence, he somehow found time to make seven tackles. 7

11 Caleb Clarke: Rampant. The bulky left winger did his best to get stuck in and bagged a try as a result. His 109 metres were the most in the game as he also beat seven defenders. The finish for his disallowed try was brilliant and on the whole, he will delighted to put some pressure on Mark Tele’a’s position. 8

10 Damian McKenzie: DMAC looked so good throughout the game in San Diego whether it was ripping cross-kicks, showing off his quick hands and jinking around defenders to open up space for others. The fly-half worked brilliantly in tandem with the oldest Barrett and the game never left the palm of McKenzie’s hand. 8

9 Cortez Ratima: Brutally unlucky to cop a head knock just before the break as he was looking absolutely sensational. Ratima’s delivery from the base was quick and crisp, he picked excellent options and scored a lovely sniping try. There is a lot of Test rugby to come from him and Robertson may be tempted to keep him in the starting XV. N/A

10 - Career defining tournament 9 - Outright blockbuster campaign 8 - Significantly influenced their team's campaign 7 - Committed and effective throughout 6 - Flash of brilliance outside of executing fundamentals 5 - Fulfilling the role required by positional (Base Level) 4 - Poor execution of fundamentals 3 - Costly errors and/or discipline that proved costly 2 - Poor performances that directly impacted the result of key games 1 - Grossly ineffective throughout 0 - Should have carried water instead

8 Ardie Savea: Only Proctor’s eight beats Savea’s seven defenders beaten as the all-time back-row was in the thick of everything, throwing his exaggerated dummies while running through and around players. His try came from a lovely tap-and-go set play where he showed off his power. 8

7 Ethan Blackadder: It was good for the flank to get some Test minutes in his legs but it was not a blockbuster showing. Blackadder ticked the boxes in a decent outing but he would be upset having missed four tackles on the night. 6

6 Luke Jacobson: One of the players doing the grunt work so the others can run wild and write headlines. Jacobson did not do much going forward but made eight tackles on defence. 6

5 Tupou Vaa’i: Made an effort to get his hands on the ball as much as he could, beating a defender in the process. Outside of that the set-piece functioned fine and he made his tackles. 6

4 Scott Barrett: Much like Vaa’i there was not too much for Barrett to get his teeth into but he made a decent seven tackles and was far better with his kick-off receipts this time out. 6

3 Fletcher Newell: Set a solid foundation the entire game and from there the ball was the responsibility of the half-backs who just picked their runners. The tighthead got through six tackles. 6

2 Asafo Aumua: The hooker would have enjoyed starting and did everything he needed to. Unfortunately for him, it was not the kind of Test which allowed him to flex his power in the carry but he would still be pleased enough with his efforts. 6

1 Tamaiti Williams: Similar to Newell as he laid the platform for others to run. It was good to see the massive prop back in Test rugby and he will be looking to build on it. 6

Replacements: Robertson used the bench nicely with George Bell scoring on debut as did Ethan de Groot off the pine. Wallace Sititi and Sam Darry looked very good in their first showing in Test rugby as did Noah Hotham. 8
