All Blacks: 12 players released including key forward duo as Scott Robertson gives big Bledisloe Cup selection hint
All Blacks forwards Ethan de Groot and Patrick Tuipulotu.
Ethan de Groot and Patrick Tuipulotu are among 12 members of the All Blacks’ Rugby Championship squad who will return to action for their provinces in the National Provincial Championship (NPC) this weekend.
Loosehead prop De Groot, who has shone at Test level since making his debut against Fiji in 2021, is regarded as one of the best scrummagers in Test rugby but withdrew from the All Blacks squad on the eve of their recent trip to South Africa due to a neck injury.
Missed second Argentina Test due to same injury
He also missed New Zealand‘s second Rugby Championship Test against Argentina due to the same injury with Tamaiti Williams elevated to the starting line-up in his place.
Meanwhile, experienced second-row Tuipulotu has been sidelined since mid-July when All Blacks coach Scott Robertson left him at home ahead of their Test against Fiji in San Diego.
The 31-year-old was injured late during the Super Rugby Pacific campaign and it seemed like the knee issue would signal a long stint on the sidelines, but he made a remarkable recovery in time for the final where he led the Blues to their first title in 21 years.
When fit, De Groot and Tuipulotu are first-choice players for New Zealand and if they come through their respective NPC matches unscathed they could be in the mix for recalls to the All Blacks squad for their upcoming Bledisloe Cup clashes in Sydney on September 21 and Wellington on September 28.
On Friday, De Groot will be in action in Invercargill for Southland in their NPC clash with Canterbury, who will be boosted by the return of All Blacks hooker George Bell.
Elsewhere, back-row duo Samipeni Finau and Luke Jacobson will join Waikato for their clash against Hawke’s Bay in Hamilton on Saturday while, in Tauranga, front-row Pasilio Tosi will turn out for Bay of Plenty against Taranaki, who will have promising lock Josh Lord in their ranks.
Tuipulotu returns for Auckland
Meanwhile, a further six All Blacks squad members will be in action on Sunday including Tuipulotu and Harry Plummer, who will turn out for Auckland against Northland in Whangarei.
In other action on that day, George Bower is set to play for Otago against Counties Manukau in Pukekohe while Tasman will have David Havili back for their Ranfurly Shield defence in Blenheim against Wellington, who will have Billy Proctor and Ruben Love back in their matchday squad.
