Scotland fly-half Adam Hastings is a major doubt for the upcoming Six Nations after he sustained a serious facial injury during Glasgow Warriors’ recent United Rugby Championship (URC) victory over the Scarlets.

Hastings was forced off the field on the half hour-mark in Warriors’ Round Seven URC encounter against the Scarlets at Scotstoun following a collision with back-row Vaea Fifita and is now set for a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

There were concerns inside the stadium as the 28-year-old received medical attention but he eventually walked off the field, although he did not return to action.

Underwent surgery on a facial fracture

He was taken to hospital where he had surgery to repair a facial fracture but returned home for his rehabilitation.

Glasgow defence coach Pete Murchie confirmed that Hastings, who was also sidelined with knee and shoulder injuries in recent years, will not be in action for months.

“It’s a long recovery process so we wish him all the best,” he said. “It’s a nasty injury so we’ll look after him and he’ll get the best of care. He’s a little bit sore and obviously it’s good that he’s had the operation.

“Obviously it was pretty clear that it was a nasty one straight away. Initially, we didn’t fully realise that it was the jaw, but it was a huge contact. It must be incredibly frustrating for him. In the last couple of years, he’s had some really bad luck. That’s the way it goes sometimes.

‘Everyone’s gutted for him’

“He knows how to recover and I’m sure he’ll recover and he’ll be back. But, yes, everyone’s gutted for him. He was starting to put together some really nice performances. So, it’s incredibly frustrating for him.”

Hastings is in his second spell at the Warriors and returned to the URC club at the start of the season after a three-year stint with Premiership outfit Gloucester.

He is viewed as Scotland‘s back-up to first-choice fly-half Finn Russell and was the starting fly-half during the recent Autumn Nations Series Tests against Fiji and Portugal.

Glasgow Warriors kick off their Champions Cup campaign against Sale Sharks at Scotstoun on Saturday. They have solid fly-half cover in Scotland internationals Tom Jordan and Duncan Weir, who replaced Hastings against the Scarlets.
