New Zealand sides announce Super Rugby squads

Date published: November 12 2019

New Zealand’s five franchises have named their squads for the upcoming Super Rugby season, with Scott Robertson’s high-flying Crusaders looking to retain the silverware for a fourth successive year.

The men from Christchurch will have to do it without the services of Owen Franks, Sam Whitelock, Jordan Taufua, Matt Todd, Kieran Read and Ryan Crotty though as they are among those to have moved on.

Of course the big signing of the off-season was Beauden Barrett’s switch from the Hurricanes to the Blues, who look a strong side for 2020 as the All Blacks fly-half links up with with Ioane brothers in Auckland.

In contrast the Highlanders are missing the likes of long-serving full-back Ben Smith and winger Waisake Naholo in what could be a difficult Super Rugby season for the Dunedin franchise under Aaron Mauger.

The Chiefs meanwhile, now under the tutelage of former Wales head coach Warren Gatland, have brought in veteran fly-half Aaron Cruden to their ranks. They’re without lock Brodie Retallick (Kobelco Steelers).
