PRO14 side Munster are in the hunt to sign former France international Mathieu Bastareaud on a short-term contract, according to reports.

The 30-year-old left Toulon at the end of the campaign and will join American side Rugby United New York in January, but the centre was expected to play a part in the World Cup.

With Bastareaud omitted from the squad by Jacques Brunel that leaves a gap for the powerhouse back to sign for a club before heading across the Atlantic.

Midi Olympique are claiming that the Limerick-based outfit are one of those interested as they look to fill the hole left by Leicester-bound Jaco Taute and their Ireland internationals, who will be away in Japan.

The French newspaper say that Johann van Graan’s men have made a “concrete offer,” but they will have to fend off competition from former club Stade Francais and Vern Cotter’s Montpellier, who are also in the running.
