France tighthead prop Mohamed Haouas has been banned for three weeks for foul play during his team’s Six Nations Test against Scotland on Sunday.

The 25-year-old pleaded guilty to punching Scotland flanker Jamie Ritchie in the 37th minute of Les Bleus’ 28-17 defeat at Murrayfield and was red carded for his offence.

France held a 7-6 lead at the time but Haouas’ dismissal contributed to their first loss in this year’s tournament.

“The Disciplinary Committee found that the act of foul play warranted a mid-range entry point (six weeks suspension) and reduced that by three weeks to take account of mitigating factors (including good conduct, guilty plea and relative inexperience at international level),” Six Nations organisers said via a statement.

Haouas is free to resume playing on Tuesday, April 14 and has the right to appeal the decision.
