Match officials confirmed for British & Irish Lions tour

Date published: June 8 2021

The match officials for the upcoming British & Irish Lions clash with Japan as well as the tour to South Africa have been announced.

The Lions will face Japan at BT Murrayfield on June 26 and Pascal Gaüzère will take charge of that match, joined by Romain Poite and Pierre Brousset.

AJ Jacobs will be the man in the middle for the opening tour match for the Lions when they face off with the Emirates Lions in Johannesburg on July 3.

Jacobs will be joined by assistant referees Wayne Barnes and Jaco Peyper for the curtain-raiser at Emirates Airline Park, with Stuart Berry on TMO duty.

The tourists face Cell C Sharks just four days later on July 7, once again at Emirates Airline Park, with Peyper taking the whistle for that one while Barnes and Jacobs will be his assistants.

Barnes will then take charge of the Lions’ third tour match – and the first outside Johannesburg – when they travel to Pretoria to face the Vodacom Bulls at the iconic Loftus Versfeld.

Jacobs and Peyper will be his assistants on July 10 to ensure the bubble environment for the tour is maintained, with all matches outside of the Test non-neutral appointments as a result.

The last midweek game of the tour on July 14 will see the Lions take on South Africa A in Cape Town, where Peyper will take charge alongside Barnes and Marius van der Westhuizen.

And the final warm-up for the Test series on July 17, which pits the Lions against DHL Stormers, will be overseen by Barnes again as Peyper and Jacobs resume assistant duties.

The tourists will then lock horns with South Africa over three matches on July 24 and 31 and August 7 which will see three referees take charge of a Lions Test for the first time.

Nic Berry is the man in the middle for the opening Test, while Ben O’Keeffe and Mathieu Raynal will oversee the second and third Tests as the tourists look to avenge their 2009 series defeat.
