Japanese Top League team Kubota Spears have announced the signing of Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx after he cancelled his Lions contract earlier in the year.
It was confirmed in May that the front-rower would be departing the Johannesburg side as part of SA Rugby’s ISP scheme, which allowed players and staff to leave their franchises and provinces with immediate effect.
Marx has previously had a short stint in Japan with NTT Communications Shining Arcs, where he scored five tries in six games before the season was cut short due to Covid-19.
The 26-year-old has garnered 33 caps for South Africa since making his debut and was a crucial part of their World Cup triumph in Asia in 2019.
He played in six of their games and came off the bench in the final as they defeated England 32-12 to claim their third global tournament and first since 2007.
