Hooker Jason Macdonald will lead the Highlanders when they face the Blues in their last warm-up match for the Super 14, at Carisbrook on Friday.

Highlanders Coach Glenn Moore said Monday he had named Macdonald and scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan as joint vice-captains and that Macdonald would lead the Highlanders until the return from injury of regular captain Craig Newby.

Cowan captained the Highlanders in their first hit-out, against the Chiefs in Invercargill on January 26.

Newby will miss the opening rounds of the competition while recovering from a foot injury that restricted his appearances for Otago in the Air New Zealand Cup last year.

Macdonald, who had been expected to stand in for Newby as Otago captain, missed the entire competition because of an Achilles tendon injury.

“The prognosis for Craig is not as bad as we first feared so we're looking forward to having him back,” Moore said.

“In the meantime, we are pleased we have the type of leadership material provided by Jason and Jimmy.”
