Lions lose Kwagga Smith to injury

The Lions have suffered a setback with the news that back-row Kwagga Smith is set to be ruled out for the rest of their Super Rugby campaign.

The 25-year-old was forced off the field with a hamstring injury midway through the first half during his team’s 37-17 defeat to the Hurricanes in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The Lions said via a press statement that the one-Test Springbok underwent a scan on Monday which revealed the extent of the injury.

“A scan done today (Monday) confirms that it is a grade two injury, so he is unlikely to be available for the rest of Super Rugby,” it read.

Meanwhile, second-row Stephan Lewies, who was a late withdrawal ahead of the Hurricanes match due to a knee injury sustained at training last Thursday, had a scan and saw a knee surgeon last week.

He will be reassessed next week.
