Kiss’ backline gamble pays off

Ulster director of rugby Les Kiss was pleased with his side's victory over the Cheetahs in their opening PRO14 clash this past weekend.

Kiss took a few risks with his backline selection. He selected a brand new 9/10 combination and shifted returning Ireland and Lions international Tommy Bowe from wing to centre. John Cooney and Christian Leali’ifano also made their run-on debuts. But these risks paid off as the Irish outfit scored six tries against their South African counterparts.

33-year-old Bowe made his return from a broken ankle and Kiss believes he can be a centre option for the entire season.

“I thought Tommy did a really good job defensively in particular,” he said to the Belfast Telegraph.

“Holding the shape we needed against the scintillating, rapid speed (of the Cheetahs), and he was very direct when he ran forwards for us.

“Part of him playing there is to be able to make sure we are resourced in that area. It is seen as a strength for us in that midfield area, but it does not take long for one or two injuries to happen and you start to get skinny there.”

Darren Cave also returned for Ulster and Luke Marshall and Jacob Stockdale should return for this weekend’s trip to Treviso.

Ireland and Lions star Jared Payne is still “three or four” weeks away from pulling on the Ulster jersey.
