Jan Serfontein eyeing Springbok recall

Montpellier centre Jan Serfontein has revealed he still has ambitions of representing South Africa at next year’s Rugby World Cup in Japan.

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has used five different centre pairings in 2018, with all of Andre Esterhuizen, Lukhanyo Am, Jesse Kriel and Damian de Allende tried in midfield.

Serfontein, who won the last of his 35 caps in the ignominious 57-0 drubbing at the hands of the All Blacks in Albany last year, has been putting his hand up with decent performances for Top 14 heavyweights Montpellier and is hoping to make a late bid for the World Cup squad.

“In my final season in South Africa I tried to play a bit more of a distribution and decision-making role,” Serfontein told Sport 24.

“Here at Montpellier we have dangerous outside backs like Frans Steyn, Nemani Nadolo, Timoci Nagusa and Benjamin Fall.

“So I try to give them the ball as much as possible. Obviously I still have to take the ball up every now and then, as is expected from a No 12 nowadays.”
