‘It’s an unacceptable result for us’ – Joe Schmidt
Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt has admitted their defeat to England was an “unacceptable result” as he looks to bounce back against Wales.
The Irish went down 57-15 at Twickenham as England ran in eight tries, with their visitors’ opening warm-up game ending in embarrassment.
When talking to the media on Tuesday, Schmidt was honest about the performance as they now turn their attention to Cardiff and the Welsh.
“It’s an unacceptable result for us, it’s a performance beneath where we would like and need to be,” said the clearly disappointed head coach.
“The whole group are very conscious that we have a short period of time to accelerate what is part of a progression.”
Ireland are set to again be without fly-half Johnny Sexton and wing Keith Earls this week while scrum-half Conor Murray is also doubtful.

Personnel was no excuse, however, for how Ireland’s set-piece performed at Twickenham, with Rory Best receiving criticism after a poor lineout.
“There are no decisions that have been made in that direction,” added coach Schmidt, saying there was “no internal noise” about Best’s position.
“If guys perform better than any other player that played last weekend, there is always a contest.”
