The Chiefs led by two points late in the game until Hurricanes flanker Karl Lowe latched onto an intercept and dashed 70 metres before the ensuing conversion rounded out the five-point margin.
The Hurricanes led 10-7 at half-time through unconverted tries to Tamati Ellison and Scott Waldrom before Chiefs captain Sione Lauaki stole the lead in the second half to add to his side's first-half try from Tanerau Latimer.
Neither team appeared to suffer any serious injury concerns ahead of their Super 14 openers in which the Hurricanes will face the Blues and the Chiefs travel to South Africa to take on the Sharks.
