Mike Brown is to appeal against the six-match suspension for stamping that may have brought a premature end to his Harlequins career.

Brown was sent off after standing on the head of Wasps hooker Tommy Taylor at Twickenham Stoop on May 9 with a disciplinary hearing deeming the offence high end in severity.

The guideline sanction of a 12-week ban was halved because of Brown’s unblemished disciplinary record and admission of guilt, but that would still not be enough to save his final season at Quins even if they reach the Premiership final.

Joins Newcastle in July

England’s most capped full-back joins Newcastle in July after failing to secure a new contract at his only club.

A new online disciplinary panel will meet on Wednesday evening to consider the appeal, meaning Brown will be unavailable to face Bath on Saturday.

He accepted the charge at the original hearing while insisting the stamp was accidental and the 35-year-old is hoping the length of the ban is reduced, enabling him to take part in the play-offs.
