Former Scotland centre Alex Dunbar calls time on career

Former Scotland centre Alex Dunbar has announced he is hanging up his boots after finally admitting defeat following years of injury trouble.

The 31-year-old was a key component of the Dark Blues’ midfield between 2013 and 2018, winning 31 caps and scoring seven tries.

He also had a 10-year stint with Glasgow Warriors but missed out on the Scotstoun club’s crowning moment in the 2015 PRO12 final due to a serious knee injury, which also ruled him out of that year’s World Cup.

He joined French club Brive in 2019 but an ankle injury has prevented him finding a new club since he was released last year.

Now he has decided to call time on his rugby career to focus on a new future in farming.

Posting on Instagram, Dunbar wrote: “It’s time to hang up the boots and pull on the wellies.

“I’ve been honoured to represent my country, play with and learn from legends of the game, travel to places I’d never had the opportunity to before and most importantly make friendships that will last a lifetime.

“Unfortunately my career has had to come to an end sooner than I’d have hoped due to injury but I’m happy and ready to move on to the next chapter of my life.”
