The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) have rubbished allegations that they are holding a “grudge” against legendary Sevens star Waisale Serevi.
The FRU denied that there was a plot to prevent the former player and coach from returning to work in his native Fiji.
Currently coaching Chinese Taipei's national Sevens team, Serevi has been at the centre of a lot of media speculation on the Pacific island.
In a move to quash rumours, the FRU released a statement on Thursday, refuting the existence of any sort of plot from within the Union against the Sevens legend whose departure from the his post as coach of Fiji was the cause of many a headline.
In the statement the FRU acknowledged that the circumstances surrounding the end of Serevi's employment with the FRU have been the subject of much public comment and speculation over several months.
“The FRU has deliberately remained silent on the issue,” the statement said.
“However, it is clear there is a concerted campaign from many quarters to recruit Serevi back into the FRU – whether as a coach or player. The FRU respects those views.
“Suggestions have been made that the FRU has a personal grudge against Serevi.
“These suggestions have no basis.
“Serevi resigned as coach of the Fiji Sevens team in July last year, after meeting with FRU directors over some serious work-related issues.
“It was agreed by both parties at the time that Serevi would have no further involvement with Fiji Rugby in the near future and that the particulars of the matter would not be disclosed publicly.”
