England have been dealt a setback after prop Joe Marler tested positive for Covid-19 and will now miss their Autumn Nations Series clash with Australia.

The Harlequins loosehead, who played 14 minutes last weekend, began isolating for 10 days on Monday after a lateral flow and PCR tests revealed he has the virus.

Marler came on for Ellis Genge in the 69-3 win over Tonga and was expected to feature throughout England’s remaining matches, against Australia and South Africa.

Tests continue for England

Since he returned the positive result, all lateral flow tests taken by players and staff have been negative. England are waiting for the outcome of an additional round of PCR testing.

It is the second time in four days that Eddie Jones’ squad have experienced a Covid scare after Owen Farrell missed the Tonga rout because of the virus, although his sample was later revealed to be a false-positive.

Now cleared to play, Farrell is likely to be restored at fly-half against the Wallabies while Newcastle rookie Trevor Davison is expected to take Marler’s place on the bench.

Burnout fears worth the risk for England wing Jonny May

England wing Jonny May is concerned that his incredible commitment to training could lead to him suffering from burnout in his rugby-playing future.

The hard-working finisher moved closer to Rory Underwood’s leading try-scoring record for his country when he grabbed a brace in the win over Tonga.

May, 31, described by head coach Jones as the most professional player he has ever encountered, is known for an extraordinary level of dedication to preparation that is held up as an example to any newcomers to the squad.

He wears this single-minded approach like armour, drawing strength from knowing he has done everything possible to be ready for matchday, but it also comes at a price that he is willing to pay.
