Wasps boss Shaun Edwards has admitted his side are being 'killed' on the field as the English champions continue on their early-season slump.

On the back of suffering their worst defeat in Europe for six years at the hands of Leinster, the London club's form has seen them risk missing out on Heineken Cup qualification for next season along with Pool progression this.

Yet Edwards is far more worried about the here and now as defensive errors and fragility become a growing problem in his ranks.

“My major concern is getting someone to catch the ball when it goes up into the air and being able to clear our lines,” he said, speaking to the Daily Mail.

“We're unable to deal with the opposition kicking game. It's killing us. The consequences are alarming but we will not over-react.”

However, despite their woes the Wales coach has refused to wield the axe as the club prepare to swap Heineken Cup for EDF Energy matters this Friday against fellow strugglers Newcastle.

“These players have given us some fantastic achievements and I'm not about to drop them. It's important to give them the chance to play themselves out of this slump. There will obviously be harsh words between us this week,” Edwards continued.

“We've lost big games before but we've never had a scoreline as bad as this. That's the worst I've seen us play in a big game for some years and it leaves me feeling gravely concerned.”
