Chris Boyd backs Dan Biggar to be fit to face England

Northampton Saints director of rugby Chris Boyd believes Dan Biggar will be fit to feature for Wales in their upcoming Six Nations clash with England.

The fly-half was forced off the field with a knee injury midway through the opening half of Northampton’s 67-17 triumph over Sale Sharks at Franklin’s Gardens on Saturday.

Biggar played in Wales’ two Six Nations victories over France and Italy and will be needed when his side face England in their top-of-the-table clash in Cardiff next Saturday.

Despite losing Biggar’s services, the Saints coped well with George Furbank switching to fly-half while Ahsee Tuala moved to full-back and Tom Collins, who came on as Biggar’s replacement, took Tuala’s place on the wing.

When asked after the game about Biggar’s withdrawal, Boyd told the Northampton Chronicle and Echo: “He came back from Italy with a really low-grade MCL strain in the knee and was keen to play.

“He trained really well on Thursday and felt really comfortable but he just caught it again and that was precautionary.

“Despite the fact (England boss) Eddie Jones was probably keen for me to keep him on the field, we decided in the best interests of his health and safety to remove him.

“He probably could have played on but I thought George (Furbank) did a good job in his space when he came off.

“I’m no medical man but I would be surprised if Dan isn’t fine to train with Wales this week.”
