‘Champions Cup win is best of my career’ – Jamie George
Saracens hooker Jamie George has hailed his side’s Champions Cup Final win over Leinster as the greatest achievement of his career to date.
The 28-year-old was one of Sarries’ standout performers in their 20-10 triumph in front of a capacity crowd at St James’ Park as he made 20 tackles and impressed with the execution of his core duties.
And the England international could not hide his delight after helping Sarries to their third Champions Cup title.
“This has been the best achievement of my rugby career so far,” George told EPCR’s official website.
“I’m feeling pretty bruised and battered, but absolutely elated. We’re the best club in Europe and have just won the best competition in club rugby – it’s a pretty good feeling.”
George praised the impact made by Saracens’ replacements and said their victory was due to a squad effort.
“Over 40 players have been involved in matchday squads this season and we have a great squad and we showed that in those people who came off the bench last night,” he added.
“Leinster are an amazing team and they are so good when they get on the front foot so we had to try and steal their momentum and we did that with line speed and physicality.”
Saracens were dealt a blow after 30 minutes when Maro Itoje was yellow carded but despite trailing at the time, Sarries dug deep and were level at 10-10 as the teams changed sides at half-time.
“I think when Maro went to the bin it was probably the most important moment for us out there on field in how we managed that period and turned it around,” said George.
“We took it to Leinster with just 14 men and to go in 10-10 at half-time was a huge psychological advantage for us.”
