Celebration time for World Rugby, one year to Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

One more year to go and one more reason to celebrate. World Rugby will celebrate one year to Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. After the debut in Rio 2016, the rugby sevens will make another appearance at the Olympic Games next year.

The 2020 Olympic Games will take place at the Tokyo Stadium. The stadium is large enough to take the pressure and the volume of people. In the past, the Tokyo Stadium was used to host some of the biggest Rugby matches.

Top athletes will be part of the rugby sevens, raising awareness about the sport to new fans all around the world. The event is a great opportunity to represent the competitive nature of the sport and try to get as many eyeballs as they can. On the last Olympic Games in Rio, the sport had an increase of the fan base by 17 million, and in 2020 it’s expected that this number will grow up to 30 million.

It’s expected to be a great season as there are 15 teams already qualified for the Olympic Games.

“After the incredible success of Rio 2016, which saw rugby sevens win the hearts of millions of new fans worldwide, we are confident that Tokyo will be an excellent platform to showcase our sport and inspire many more to take up playing or watching the unique game of sevens.

“We are both excited and honoured that rugby sevens will return to the biggest stage in a sport where spectators will witness the players’ immense talent and athleticism over six action-packed days,” says Sir Bill Beaumont, World Rugby Chairman

There were many regional qualification tournaments for the Tokyo Games in 2020. The tournaments took place at North and South America and Europe. Many more will take place by the end of 2019.

The Tokyo Games will have a different agenda. For instance, the men’s competition will be played first in July, and then the women’s competitions will take place by the end of July and beginning of August.
